Biography
Sir Stelios Haji-Ioannou is best known for creating easyJet in 1995, at the age of 28. Prior to founding the low-cost airline that revolutionized European air travel, Stelios created Stelmar, a shipping company which was floated on the New York Stock Exchange in 2001 and subsequently sold to a rival in 2005.
True to his beliefs in serial entrepreneurship, Stelios consolidated the ownership of the easy brand into his private company, easyGroup, comprising several easy-branded businesses - all dedicated to offering consumers more value for less.
At the age of 39, Stelios received a knighthood from Queen Elizabeth II for services to entrepreneurship. More recently, through the Stelios Philanthropic Foundation, he has expanded his dedication to making a difference to society by launching a number of philanthropic initiatives supporting entrepreneurship, higher education and environmental sustainability. Additionally, in 2009 Stelios was nominated the Honorary General Consul for the Republic of Cyprus in the Principality of Monaco.
More likely to be on an aircraft than in an office, Stelios is 43 years old and lives in Monaco.
A compelling and dynamic speaker - both in front of large audiences as well as smaller, targeted groups - Stelios makes an impressive number of speaking appearances year-round and throughout the globe. Given the power of the spoken word as a catalyst for positive change and inspiration for future generations, 'Stelios Speaks!' is an integral element in the activities of the Stelios Philanthropic Foundation. Stelios' most recent speaking engagements are included in this section.
In addition to the above companies, Stelios has a keen interest in computerisation and information technology systems in general. Both Stelmar and easyJet are paperless companies which enable him to run them from anywhere in the world through his laptop computer.
A major coup for Parliament Communications was the acceptance by Stelios to address 2000 travel agents at a major conference in Barcelona (baring in mind that easyJet is the only airline in the world that has never paid a commission to a travel agent). Flying in the face of convention, Stelios risked being shot down by an audience of travel agents, however, the conference Black box revealed details of how he skilfully landed his message amongst the previously hostile delegates.
