Spelbound consists of 13 acrobatic gymnasts who are all former or current members of the Great Britain Acrobatic Gymnastics Team. Between them, they have won a vast amount of medals in their sport both at national and International level.
They were catapulted into the public awareness after their first appearance on top rated ITV show, Britain’s Got Talent in April 2010 and went on to feature prominently in the headlines about the show before winning the live TV final in front of a watching audience of 15 million – one of ITV’s biggest hits of 2010.
The group was formed in 2009 especially to enter Britain’s Got Talent and showcase their sport, which was not generally known about. Acrobatic gymnastics is not currently an Olympic sport, which is where most people have seen gymnastics. What you see at the Olympics is called artistic gymnastics and is completely different to what Spelbound do.
Their original goal was to raise the profile of acrobatics to a wider audience but they never thought they’d actually achieve what they did and go on to thrill a global TV audience and make themselves and their sport known across the World.
The group met whilst teammates at Spelthorne in Surrey but are now based at Heathrow Gymnastics Club near the airport, which has the strongest artistic and acrobatic sections in the country.
The group is coached by Neil Griffiths who is also a Senior Coach with the Great Britain National Team and also the Head of Acrobatics at Heathrow Gymnastics.
Spelbound has 13 people in it to reflect the 5 disciplines in acrobatics, which are Women’s Pairs (2 girls) Men’s Pairs (2 boys), Mixed Pairs (boy and a girl), Women’s Groups (3 girls) and Men’s Groups (4 boys).
The troupe received many positive and favorable comments and reviews both during and after their Britain’s Got Talent experience and most have picked up on the work ethic and driven professionalism instilled in the guys at an early age and an essential ingredient to succeed in such a demanding sport.
