Biography
Dr. Marilyn Orcharton qualified as a dentist at Glasgow University in 1966.
After working as an assistant dentist and teaching at Glasgow university she set up her own practice just outside Glasgow in1974.
In addition she was one of only five dentists in the UK who had an appointment as a medico legal adviser at the Medical Defence Union in London and was a Glasgow representative on the Local Dental Committee and eventually national chairman (first woman) of the LDC conference. Marilyn also served on the General Dental Services Committee West of Scotland committee for Postgraduate education and was one of the first 'NHS vocational trainers' in Scotland.
During this time she realised that the National Health Service was not working for dentists or their patients and in 1986 set up Denplan with a colleague from the Medical Defence Union.
Denplan quickly became and still is the leading dental healthcare plan in the UK. The company was sold to Private Patient Plan in 1993 for forty million pounds, however Marilyn sold her share in 1992 and set up Isoplan a company dedicated to producing management software to assist all vocationally trained professionals who had no business training. Isoplan also has a very successful payment plan for dentists and vets.
She is co-owner of JIT International, a company that provides international training for overseas businesswomen, in particular former eastern block countries.
A great deal of her time is devoted to assisting small businesses to grow and develop and also to advise and encourage business start ups. She is a firm believer that the future success of the country lies in the hands of small businesses.
Marilyn is more than accustomed to keynote speaking having been invited to address innumerable functions both in the UK and worldwide. Recently she became a reluctant convert to the Net. Having approached it from a Luddites perspective, She has combined her enthusiasm for business and her new found knowledge, to become a powerful speaker on Internet applications.
Marilyn was elected the first woman President of the Glasgow Chamber of Commerce in 1998, was honoured as one of the Leading Women Entrepreneurs of the World in 1999, Received the Medal of Honour from the British Dental Association in 2000 and is well known for her public speaking around the world.
Marilyn Orcharton has been on the panel of BBC Question Time made a 30minute documentary for STV entitled 'If I were First Minister' and regularly features on current affairs programmes on radio and TV.
She is married to David, has two children and two grandchildren and serves on several charity boards.
Marilyn is also chairman of the Small Business Bureau and enjoys travelling and helping business start ups in the UK and beyond.
