Biography
Halldóra Mogensen is a Member of Parliament for the Icelandic Pirate Party and a fascinating speaker across a range of subjects related to social and economic inequality and how we may restructure the current models to create a better future.
Currently Halldóra is the chair of the Pirate Party and the Parliamentary Welfare Committee. She started her journey into politics in the summer of 2012 when she helped found the Icelandic Pirate Party and ran for the 2013 elections, coming 2nd in her district of Reykjavik North. Halldóra served as deputy MP until the 2016 autumn elections when she was elected into parliament and was then re-elected in the 2017 autumn elections following the Panama leaks scandal. During her time as deputy MP she authored a proposal on Universal Basic Income, a proposal that she submitted to parliament 5 times. After 5 years of fighting for the proposal, it was passed in June of 2018 as an important part of the work of the newly founded parliamentary future committee.
Halldóra discusses how our societies and the economy would change if people had the freedom to make choices based on, not what they have to do to survive, but what they want to do to thrive? In a future where technological advancement, with machine learning and automation, is poised to greatly disrupt our societies and create an ever deepening inequality, we must look at the possibility of severing the connection between work and income and provide everyone with the means to thrive. In her talk Halldóra aims to further the conversation on universal basic income and hopes to inspire us to start questioning our current economic model and to invent our way into a more sustainable future.
